Lahore Residents Hit by Rising Food Prices, Demand Action Against Price Gouging
Citizens say the prices of fruits and vegetables are being determined arbitrarily, with many vendors allegedly selling essential commodities at prices far higher than official rates.
A Lahore resident said that onions and tomatoes are locally produced, yet onions are being sold for around Rs100 per kilogram while tomatoes are priced at more than Rs200 per kilogram in several markets.
“Onions and tomatoes are essential ingredients in almost every household kitchen, but the soaring prices have severely affected the purchasing power of ordinary people,” the citizen said.
Residents complained that the unchecked rise in food prices has made daily life increasingly difficult for low- and middle-income families. They urged the Punjab government and relevant authorities to strengthen price-control mechanisms, ensure the implementation of official price lists and take strict action against profiteers.
The public has demanded that the government take notice of the situation and put an end to what they described as a “market of looting,” saying authorities must fulfil their professional responsibilities and provide relief to inflation-hit citizens.
