Profit Mafia Active as Solar Panel Prices Refuse to Fall
Lahore: The Punjab government appears unable to enforce its authority in the provincial capital, Lahore, as profiteers continue exploiting consumers without restraint.
Due to weak regulatory oversight, illegal profiteering groups are reportedly charging excessive prices, leaving the public burdened by inflated costs. Despite a historic decline in petroleum prices, consumers relying on solar energy remain deprived of any relief.
Solar panel prices in local markets have not decreased, as shopkeepers remain unwilling to lower rates. Earlier, rising prices were justified by citing the impact of the US-Iran conflict, which allegedly pushed global oil prices higher and caused a surge in solar panel costs across Pakistan.
However, even after a significant reduction in fuel prices, solar panels continue to be sold at expensive rates.
Shopkeepers argue that they purchased existing stock at higher prices and cannot afford to sell those panels at reduced rates. They also acknowledge that lower solar prices would boost sales and improve affordability, especially for low-income households seeking alternative energy solutions.
Amid this situation, the government appears absent, while regulatory authorities remain ineffective. Due to institutional negligence, profiteering continues unchecked, and consumers are left paying the price as officials fail to take meaningful action.
