Rain Brings Relief to Islamabad, NDMA Warns of Flood Risks
Light to moderate rain lashed Islamabad and Rawalpindi on June 21, dropping temperatures from 36°C to 24°C, while authorities warned of urban flooding and glacial lake outburst risks.
The twin cities received much-needed relief from the heat as rain began Sunday evening and continued intermittently, with Islamabad recording 28mm at Saidpur and Rawalpindi 15mm at Shamsabad . The downpour turned weather pleasant but created slushy conditions in low-lying areas .
The National Disaster Management Authority had issued a nationwide alert ahead of the rainfall, warning of urban flooding risks in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and the Potohar region . The NDMA's National Emergencies Operation Centre also cautioned about heightened Glacial Lake Outburst Flood threats in northern mountainous areas, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa .
Provincial disaster management authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa directed district administrations to remain on high alert, with fears of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas . The Met Office forecast continued rain on Monday afternoon and evening, while dry weather is expected in the morning . Hot and dry conditions are anticipated in most parts of the country, with isolated rain expected in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
