First Round of Iran-US Talks Concludes in Switzerland, 60-Day Roadmap Approved
A major diplomatic breakthrough has emerged in the ongoing talks between Iran and the United States following the conclusion of the first round of negotiations in Switzerland.
At the end of the Lucerne summit, held under the joint mediation of Qatar and Pakistan, both sides agreed on a formal 60-day roadmap aimed at reaching a comprehensive final agreement.
According to a joint statement issued by Qatar and Pakistan, the first high-level talks under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding concluded in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Significant progress was reported on several key issues, including the establishment of a permanent mechanism for future technical negotiations.
The statement said both parties agreed to form a high-level committee to oversee the political dimensions of the negotiation process. Lead negotiators will regularly brief the committee on progress, while special working groups will address the nuclear program, sanctions, conflict resolution, and monitoring.
A dedicated direct communication mechanism has also been established to ensure the safe movement of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and to prevent misunderstandings or unwanted incidents.
Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, praised the joint declaration and acknowledged the role of Pakistani and Qatari mediation in advancing diplomatic efforts.
Developments were also reported regarding Lebanon, where parties agreed to establish a joint deconfliction cell with support from mediating countries to help ensure implementation of conflict de-escalation measures.
Technical-level negotiations will continue throughout the week in Bürgenstock, while Qatar and Pakistan pledged to keep supporting dialogue for a peaceful and productive outcome.
Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif is expected to depart for Pakistan with his delegation at 1 PM local time.
