Pakistan, US Enter New Era of Strategic and Economic Partnership: PM Shehbaz
Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 250th Independence Anniversary of the United States, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday (June 4) underscored the strength and depth of Pakistan-US relations, saying the two countries are poised to further broaden cooperation across multiple sectors.
The prime minister said the longstanding relationship between Islamabad and Washington has evolved significantly over the decades and now encompasses a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, agriculture, science, education, health, energy, counterterrorism, and cultural exchanges.
Recalling the historic foundations of bilateral ties, Shehbaz Sharif noted that the United States was among the first countries to recognize Pakistan following its independence. He highlighted the role of former US President Harry Truman, who welcomed Pakistan into the international community through a congratulatory message sent to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
The prime minister acknowledged the contributions of the United States to Pakistan’s development, citing support for the Green Revolution, the construction of Tarbela Dam, educational initiatives, and major infrastructure projects that have benefited the country over the years.
Highlighting the importance of the Pakistani-American community, the premier said nearly one million Pakistani-Americans continue to serve as a vital bridge between the two nations. He added that around 80 major American companies are currently operating in Pakistan, demonstrating confidence in the country's economic potential.
Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan's rapidly expanding information technology sector presents new opportunities for economic collaboration, noting that the United States remains one of the most important destinations for Pakistani IT exports.
On regional and global affairs, the prime minister emphasized the history of cooperation between the two countries during critical moments, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the international campaign against terrorism.
Referring to regional peace efforts, he appreciated US President Donald Trump’s role in helping reduce tensions in South Asia and credited his diplomatic engagement with contributing to regional stability.
"We shall forever remain grateful to President Trump for restoring peace in South Asia and saving millions of people. In this context, he will always be remembered as a man of peace," the prime minister said.
The premier also revealed that Pakistan is currently facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran, expressing appreciation for the confidence both countries have placed in Islamabad's diplomatic role. He commended Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his efforts in promoting peace and stability in the region.
Earlier, Chargé d'Affaires Natalie A. Baker highlighted the progress achieved in Pakistan-US relations over the past two years. She credited President Donald Trump's leadership with elevating bilateral ties into what she termed a strategic partnership based on mutual respect, shared interests, and a common vision for prosperity and security.
Baker also praised Pakistan's diplomatic role in facilitating high-level contacts between the United States and Iran, stating that Pakistan's strong relations with both countries uniquely positioned it to support dialogue between the two sides.
