"Big governance shift ahead? Islamabad may soon get its own assembly and chief executive."
According to reports, a special committee has submitted its recommendations to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif regarding the proposed administrative changes.
The committee, comprising Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Sanaullah, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, and Musadik Malik, suggested creating an independent governing framework for Islamabad with a separate Chief Executive.
According to the recommendations, Islamabad's proposed assembly would consist of 20 to 30 members elected through direct elections. The assembly would also have its own independent secretariat and would be responsible for legislation related specifically to the federal capital.
The proposal further suggests that development and administrative matters, including issues related to the Capital Development Authority (CDA), would come under the jurisdiction of the proposed assembly.
Following the Prime Minister’s approval, legislation regarding Islamabad’s separate administrative structure is expected to be introduced in parliament.
