New tax alert in Karachi
According to officials, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) plans to impose a one percent tax on bills generated by hotels, guest houses, lodges, marriage halls, marquees, marriage lawns, banquet facilities, and Airbnb accommodations.
The proposal is expected to be presented for approval in the upcoming fiscal year's budget. Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffar has invited public feedback and objections regarding the proposed tax policy.
A public hearing on objections is scheduled for June 10 at the KMC office.
According to the Municipal Commissioner, the new tax falls under "Entertainment Tax – City Tourism and Hospitality" and will be included in the existing tax gazette and bylaws to strengthen the financial position of KMC's tourism department and improve public services.
Officials stated that under the Sindh Local Government Act 2013, KMC has the authority to impose taxes, fees, rates, and tolls.
