Runaway Inflation Fuels Public Anger as Food Prices Continue to Soar in Punjab
Consumers say the prices of everyday food items have risen sharply, making it increasingly difficult for low- and middle-income families to manage their household budgets. Many believe that official inflation figures do not accurately reflect the prices they face in local markets.
One resident said the government's data on inflation is "completely different from the reality on the ground," adding that retailers often blame higher wholesale market prices while accountability remains weak.
Citizens also accused relevant authorities of failing to enforce price regulations, alleging that profiteering has become widespread due to inadequate inspections and monitoring.
"The institutions collect some data and think their job is done, while the situation is getting worse every day," another resident said, expressing concern over the continued rise in the cost of living and the weakening purchasing power of consumers.
Another citizen claimed that there is little uniformity in market prices, with different shops charging different rates for the same products. "There is no effective system of checks and balances. It feels as if the government has lost control of the markets," the resident said.
The public has urged authorities to strengthen market inspections, crack down on profiteering, and introduce effective measures to stabilize the prices of essential commodities and provide relief to consumers.
